My List - 39 Non-Negotiable Items

It's amazing that I even wrote such an extensive list, but write I did. It was Saturday, October 5th 2006, in the cab of a truck, going from southern California to Northern California to attend a leadership conference called "Principia" (Latin - first principles, fundamentals) for a week.  The evening before I made the decision to break-up with my boyfriend of 2-1/2 years - difficult and yet right for me.  I deserved to be in an honest, happy, trusting, fulfilling, loving relationship - and that's not where we were after 2-1/2 years.  I am so glad that I had the loving support of my Aunty Ku'uipo and dear friends, Cherie and Harold Whittlesey, who supported me through the hurt and disappointment.

We left at 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning to begin the long journey.  Harold driving, Cherie next to him and me in the cab of their truck.  On a yellow sheet of paper, I wrote my name Tina at the top right and the date 10/7/06.  Below that I wrote What do I want in a #10 relationship with the man of my dreams?  My list began to flow and grow as I thought about my relationships with the men in my life.  What did I enjoy?  What did I want more of?  How did I want to be treated?  How did I want him to be with me and my family?  It was a mind-boggling experience but a cleansing one as I listed everything in the positive sense of what I wanted - clear, specific and descriptive.

Here are my first few entries:
- is available legally, emotionally, spiritually, geographically, stable, secure, confident, grounded, not self-centered
- easy to talk to about anything; clear communicator
- enjoys listening to me talk
- takes the time to call me & talk to me about what's happening or just to tell me he's thinking of me & loves me
- cares about and supports me in all things (kids, family, job, ambitions, desires, etc.)
- has a good sense of humor; likes to make me laugh (not too silly)
- easy to smile; friendly; sociable; personable
- loves to see me smile & be happy; adores & respects me for who I am and what I look like

Woohoo!  What a start!  Through the journey, I slept and wrote my extensive list.  When I thought it was done, I shared it with Cherie.  She then asked me to mark those items that were "non-negotiable" - that I would take a stand for and not be in a relationship if those items did not exist.  I ended up marking 39 items as non-negotiable with a star and very few items were not marked.  I was certain that I would get what I wanted and deserved!

I'm getting emotional as I write this and reflect back on my list because I got what I wanted!  My husband of almost three years, Séamus F. Murphy (he claims the "F" stands for Fun) is all of that and more.  I met him on Sunday, October 6th, 2006, at 5:30 p.m. as we rode together in the same van to the first night of Principia.  (Both of us were staying at the Travel Lodge separately with roommates.)  Over the next few days we got to know each other better and I finally shared with him my list on Thursday at lunch.  After his quick review, he confidently said he met 38 of the 39 non-negotiable items and didn't meet 1 item - steady income of at least $75,000/year or more.  We discussed his income and I decided that he wasn't far from it and believed he could get there.

I couldn't have asked for a better partner - he literally says he adores me, he loves me for who I am and also loves the ding-bat side of me (yes, I am that sometimes!).  He supports me with my work, my family and my self-development.  He challenges me in different ways and yet keeps an open line of communication - so both of us keep growing, loving and supporting each other in what we want to do.  He takes time to hug me everyday, hold my hand whenever we're together and kisses me so gently and lovingly (great kisser was on my list!).  I got what I deserved and wanted!

The list was the premise of our desire to create a game.  Both Séamus and I had a written list - and yet so many of our friends who wanted to be in a relationship did not.  What if we could help them and others create a list by asking a few questions in a game?  What if those in a committed relationship could also use the same questions to appreciate each other or do new things to enhance their relationship?  And, hence, the What do you want? The inspiring game of connections was born.

Hope you enjoyed this blog - and thanks for reading to the end!  Stay tuned - we'll post our lists soon on our website.  Aloha, Tina

What Goal Will You Accomplish This Year?

That was a question that all players had to answer at our table on April 8th, game night. There were various answers - get to know myself better, move out on my own, build a better relationship with my partner, create the next game for Seniors, achieve the Presidential level at my company.  Excellent!  Having a goal sets the intention and sharing it with others keeps you on target.  What will YOU accomplish this year?  Aloha, Tina

We Had a Blast - Friday, April 8th!

It was an amazing experience! There were 3 tables of people (6 or more) playing the game at the same time and the energy was amazing!  There were 6 players at my table and once we got through sharing our initial list of qualities, the questions flew left and right and each person's "My List" grew longer and longer. The open conversations, clarity and caring carried on throughout the evening from 6:30 to 11pm.

Thanks to Margaret for allowing us to use her party room and to Jonathan and Paul for their awesome suggestion and support in playing the game.  Our mission was accomplished - connecting people... enriching lives!  Aloha, Tina

Support Abounds!

We're on to the next stage of sharing our game. We know the results that the game could create - the question is: how do we share it with others?

On Wednesday, Feb. 9, we had 13 people join us for our game launch downtown and it was an amazing evening centered around the game's history, giving thanks to those who've supported us and inviting all to buy a game for their own use. 15 games were purchased and we committed 15% of the proceeds to the winning charity - IHS (Institute for Human Services).

On Friday, Feb. 11, Séamus and I attended the first PSI Basic staff meeting for the March Basic and I stated my goal of having 250 games paid in full by March 17. Whew! That's a challenging one - and yet from our test results, I know that we've got a special game and can make this goal!

Today, Feb. 21, (after I finished the Great Aloha Run), we took advantage of Courtland Warren's “Be 1 in 1000” program (Personally Driven Personal Development | Courtland Warren) and got wow'd with excitement and take away steps to help us meet our business goals (I was #207 of 1000). In the evening, we met with good friends Paul and Diane Hendricks (Paul E. Hendricks, Best-Selling Author and Speaker) for dinner at Ward Phuket and discussed various ways of reaching people with our branding, our message and our passion. It was refreshing and delicious! Séamus and I have our work cut out for us and would love to hear your feedback and support. Our mission is to “Create fun and thoughtful games to connect people and enrich lives” and we're busy doing it ~ one game at a time!

Aloha, Tina

Manufacturing Error Confirmed & Reported

Oh oh - we wish it wasn't so, but it appears it is. On Friday, January 28th, during a wonderful presentation to a high school class who eagerly wanted to play the game, we realized there weren't enough “My List” forms to go around. There were only 12 in the box - and there should have been 24! We opened another box and found 11 and in another box we found 12. In all cases, 24 was not included. To correct this situation, anyone who bought the game prior to February 1 will receive a separate pad of 12 “My List” forms. For all future purchases an extra pad of 12 will be included. If you need more now, we've posted the form (2 per page) on our website via the “Learn more about the game” link. The error has been reported to the manufacturer and we're waiting to hear back from them.

Going the Distance—And Loving it!

After our games arrived, we decided to test the shipping process - asking a dear friend (Cherie) in Torrance, CA, my son Colton in San Francisco, CA and my Mom in Kapahulu on Oahu - to help . It's amazing what we needed to complete this process! USPS boxes, brown paper, newspaper (stuffing), shredded color paper (nice touch), sealing tape, thank you card, return address label and shipping label. We packed the boxes and shipped them off. The response was wonderful - the boxes arrived in good shape! Cherie suggested that we add our story to the thank you card, which we did (thank you sister!) and Colton complimented how it was packed and addressed. It was also a learning process using PayPal to set-up the shipping cost. USPS priority was the best way to go. We're ready for more orders to come our way!

Games Arrive—Excitement Thrives!

Finally, our What do you want? games arrived today on a hot and humid Friday in Honolulu. We have been anxiously waiting for this day to arrive and what an amazing feeling to drive up to the warehouse where our shipment was waiting. Seeing the cartons neatly stacked on the pallets all wrapped up with the words “Tina Murphy Games” taped to the side of each box was incredible. “Wow, we've done it! They're here!” With the help of Randy Lund we transported our precious cargo to our storage facility where we expect they will enjoy a brief stay.

The sweat and effort unloading the cartons of our relationship games was well worth it. It is quite fitting considering the effort we put into this project over the last three years. Although it might not have been physical sweat that we emitted during that time, we burned many late night light bulbs to achieve our self imposed goal deadlines. We also built many inspiring relationships in creating, testing and producing this, our first game, and look forward to more lessons to be learned as we share it with others.

Now onto the next phase of our dream, to connect people and enrich lives by asking questions in our game. What do you really want? What is important to you? These questions are not asked enough of our family and friends and we believe our game will inspire people to begin to ask these questions more often. Creating meaningful relationships have helped the two of us create this game, and it is with that in mind we look forward to sharing our game with you. So, its off to the shower to wash off the well earned sweat and to prepare for a restful night. Tomorrow is another day to go for our goals with clear intention. How are you doing with your goals?

Aloha, Séamus

It's a Win-Win Collaboration — Friends & Family Make it Happen!

My husband, Séamus and I want to thank our many, many friends who tested the game and provided their honest and loving feedback, to my kids (Ethan and Arielle) who gave us the best feedback about the cover and to two very dear friends—Janice Takemoto-Gentile and Cherie Hudson-Whittlesey for taking the time to review all 250 questions and providing great guidance. In addition, a special thank you to the one person who made it come alive at last—our dedicated graphic designer, Kelli Ann Harada.
